The Programme

The musical programme for the evening will include pieces by Mozart, Britten, Saint-Saens and Handel – including a special arrangement of The Carnival of the Animals. Whether you are a concert-goer or this will be your first taste of classical music, we can guarantee you will enjoy this. It’s a rare chance to hear the unusual combination of flute, oboe and harpsichord – with some piccolo, cor anglais and bassoon thrown in for good measure!

The Galliard Trio

The Galliard Trio was formed thirty two years ago. Since then it has been giving concerts throughout the south of England, donating its services for charities and good causes, such as the Churches Conservation Trust, Cheshire Homes and NSPCC. This is the first occasion on which it has played in Caldecote, though it performed in nearby Toft last year.

The Trio has established a reputation for programmes of great variety. Its repertoire is wide, partly because of the different combinations of instruments available and partly because of its arrangements of music from the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The members live within a short distance of each other in North London, but the Trio performs regularly outside the capital in churches, arts centres, country houses and schools.

Thank you to everyone who came armed with gloves, shears and bin bags. I don’t think any of us expected to finish before our allotted two hours – a testament to the old adage that many hands make light work!

So we thought we’d put in another burst of effort before the long-awaited summer gets underway! Join us on Saturday 11th May for a couple of hours from 10am, and we’ll see what we can achieve together.

Please bring along gardening gloves (and any extra sets you have that others could borrow), and any gardening equipment you have that we might find useful!

Feel free to come for the whole two hours or whatever you can spare during the morning. We’ll meet up at the church at 10am.

• Martin white (oboe and cor anglais)
• Alec Forshaw (bassoon, harpsichord and piano)

The date for our Caldecote Concert is set for Saturday June 15th, and will include time to talk to the musicians after the concert with light food and drink refreshments in the garden of the Old Rectory. We will give more details of the programme and how to buy tickets nearer the time.

But for now – this is not an event to be missed: do jot a note of it on your calendar!

We have set a date to meet again to further discuss the ideas and how best each event can be arranged – on the slate at the moment are the June 16th fundraising concert at the church, the Open Gardens, and a flower arranging event in November. If you think you could help with these or have more suggestions, please get in touch, or come and join us when we meet next: from 8pm on 11th April at 123 Highfields Road.

We currently have two ‘vacancies’ on the delivery team! Could you help out, or do you know someone who might be able to give some time once every two months to help make the load lighter? We are looking for a deliverer to take on half of West Drive (our previous deliverer has moved away), and someone to take on some of Old Caldecote to share out the delivery load a little more in the old end of the village.

The reason seems to be that the parent birds had more trouble finding the types of moth caterpillars that they feed their young with on trees that aren’t native to the country. Churchyards – and St Michael’s is no exception – very often contain mature trees such as yew and holly, and these provide ideal habitats for the all-important caterpillar. Songbirds like great tits and blue tits are much more likely to thrive here than in urban parks which tend to be populated by younger trees imported from abroad.
