October Newsletter

Dear Friends,

At this time of year churches hold Harvest Festivals to celebrate crops being gathered in from the fields and were traditionally held at the end of September to coincide with the autumn new moon. Harvest Festival is celebrated around the world and is a good opportunity to thank farmers and farm workers who work so hard on the land and at sea. The first ever Harvest Festival was held in a small church in Morwenstow, Cornwall, in 1843. Reverend Robert Hawker invited his parishioners to a special service of thanksgiving and praise. Victorian Hymns such as ‘We plough the fields and scatter’ and ‘All things bright and beautiful’ helped to popularise the idea of Harvest Festival and spread the annual custom of decorating the church with home grown produce and flowers. Harvest Festival reminds Christians of all the good things God gives us, and encourages us to share with others in need. Harvest time is also a good time for us to reflect and to be thankful for the food we have, and to think of those around the world who are hungry. This year we will be celebrating our Harvest Festival at Childerley Chapel on Sunday 1 October at 11.00am, and we will be accepting gifts of food for the Cambridge Foodbank. We do hope you can join us at this traditional service of thanksgiving.

I hope you have a wonderful October!

God Bless,

Clare

September Newsletter

Dear Friends,

I hope you had a good summer and are now feeling refreshed and renewed, ready for all that is in store this Autumn. The festival of Michaelmas, or St Michael and All Angels has been celebrated in parishes throughout Britain for centuries. Michaelmas is also traditionally seen as one of the quarter days of the calendar, marking, in medieval times, the end of the farming year with the harvesting and gathering of crops. Falling on September 29, near the equinox, it is also associated with the beginning of Autumn and days gradually getting shorter. Celebrating Michaelmas is one way to remind ourselves of the changing pattern of the seasons. For Christians, it is also a reminder of the light of God’s love shining into the darkness as we approach winter.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

God Bless,

Clare
