January Newsletter

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year! As we embark on this New Year – 2024 – I wonder: what journey of faith is God calling us on? Each of us may face difficult challenges and unexpected diversions: we can’t predict the year ahead. Our recent experiences have shown us that anything and everything can happen. But going on a faith journey with God is a positive, exciting thing. It can give us purpose and meaning; it can be challenging but most importantly it can give us hope, for a better and brighter today and tomorrow. We don’t know what journey God is taking us on this year. But we can be certain that God who calls us is faithful and promises always to be with us, especially when we can’t sense His presence. As we settle into this New Year, whether we have set goals or not, let’s endeavour to step out in faith, seeking God and following Him wherever He calls us to.

God Bless,

Clare

December Newsletter

Dear Friends,

Every year Christmas gives us a great sense of fresh hope and wonder. Jesus’s birth transformed the world: it changed lives, and continues to change us. He was born in the humblest and most unlikely circumstances, in a stable surrounded by animals. Jesus is the living hope that God is with us, through thick and thin. Jesus is the Christmas gift of God’s unconditional love and forgiveness. Jesus is the light of the world, shining through the darkest darkness, and keeping alive that flicker of hope and joy which can never be extinguished. The Christmas story reminds us that even if we are afraid, we too can experience a renewed sense of hope and joy. So lets celebrate the wonderful news together!

Wishing you and your family a very Happy Christmas.

God Bless,

Clare

November Newsletter

Dear Friends,

Here at St Michael and All Angels, we are entering a new season in the Church’s year; the season of remembrance. This month we will be commemorating Remembrance Sunday on November 12 starting at 10:50am, in the peace garden, followed by a service in the Village Hall with refreshments afterward. All are most welcome to join us. Unfortunately, this year, war again seems much closer to us because of what’s happening in Ukraine and in the Holy Land. There are many other ongoing conflicts around the world, including Sudan, Ethiopia and the Yemen, and other nations such as Syria and Afghanistan are still suffering the devastating consequences of war. The terrible images on our tv screens remind us of the sad realities of war, and bring home to us the severe consequences for ordinary people. So this year, as well as remembering those from our village who gave their lives for our country in the two World Wars, and all conflicts since, and also remembering those known personally to us, we will be thinking of and praying for all those suffering today, and praying for peace. For many fighting in the two World Wars, Christian faith helped them through the horrors of war. Their faith gave them hope that things would be better and that good would overcome the darkness in the end. It is this hope we share today. Christians believe faith gives us strength, consolation and hope to carry on through the most difficult of times.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning time, we will remember them.

God Bless,

Clare

October Newsletter

Dear Friends,

At this time of year churches hold Harvest Festivals to celebrate crops being gathered in from the fields and were traditionally held at the end of September to coincide with the autumn new moon. Harvest Festival is celebrated around the world and is a good opportunity to thank farmers and farm workers who work so hard on the land and at sea. The first ever Harvest Festival was held in a small church in Morwenstow, Cornwall, in 1843. Reverend Robert Hawker invited his parishioners to a special service of thanksgiving and praise. Victorian Hymns such as ‘We plough the fields and scatter’ and ‘All things bright and beautiful’ helped to popularise the idea of Harvest Festival and spread the annual custom of decorating the church with home grown produce and flowers. Harvest Festival reminds Christians of all the good things God gives us, and encourages us to share with others in need. Harvest time is also a good time for us to reflect and to be thankful for the food we have, and to think of those around the world who are hungry. This year we will be celebrating our Harvest Festival at Childerley Chapel on Sunday 1 October at 11.00am, and we will be accepting gifts of food for the Cambridge Foodbank. We do hope you can join us at this traditional service of thanksgiving.

I hope you have a wonderful October!

God Bless,

Clare

September Newsletter

Dear Friends,

I hope you had a good summer and are now feeling refreshed and renewed, ready for all that is in store this Autumn. The festival of Michaelmas, or St Michael and All Angels has been celebrated in parishes throughout Britain for centuries. Michaelmas is also traditionally seen as one of the quarter days of the calendar, marking, in medieval times, the end of the farming year with the harvesting and gathering of crops. Falling on September 29, near the equinox, it is also associated with the beginning of Autumn and days gradually getting shorter. Celebrating Michaelmas is one way to remind ourselves of the changing pattern of the seasons. For Christians, it is also a reminder of the light of God’s love shining into the darkness as we approach winter.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

God Bless,

Clare

August Newsletter

Dear Friends,

August is traditionally the time for long Summer holidays. A time to relax, rest, and recharge our batteries. A time for getting up later, maybe, with no need to rush to school – or to work! Summer can be a good opportunity to reflect on the year so far. Many of us may have been facing difficulties, with our own health or that of loved ones, for example, or our life circumstances may be challenging. As well as present troubles, we may also have future worries and uncertainties. In the face of all we might be feeling or facing at the moment, Christians believe that we can turn to God, asking for help and strength. The more difficult our circumstances may be, the more tempting it is to retreat into ourselves, rather than reaching out for help. In all our anxieties, Jesus reaches out and promises rest for our minds and to help us to regain our sense of inner peace and calm: “Come to me all who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens,” he says, “and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) Jesus is not saying life won’t ever be hard, but he is saying the comfort and rest he can give us will help us to get through. Faith can help make our lives more bearable. The peace and rest we receive from him helps us to cope with whatever life throws at us and reassures us that he is with us and won’t ever let us go.

I hope you have a wonderful Summer and I look forward to seeing you soon.

God Bless,

Clare

July Newsletter

Dear Friends,

Summer is here, and after a very cool wet spring, we have warm weather at last! We are very blessed to be living in such a beautiful part of Cambridgeshire, and it has been lovely watching each season unfold. The beauty of God in creation is breathtaking in all its diversity. Our churchyard in particular is an incredibly beautiful and tranquil place. It is very encouraging to see the wildflower areas developing. We have lots of daisies, buttercups, cow parsley and poppies, nettles and dandelions. Going forward, we hope to encourage more biodiversity. The churchyard is also home to many different species of wildlife and insects, including bats, squirrels, foxes, rabbits, crows and small birds. Why not come in and take a wander, to see what you can spot?

I hope you have a wonderful July.
